Tavira, with its timeless charm and tranquil squares, has just welcomed a new gastronomic jewel: Mirsal Restaurant. Located inside the stunning Palácio de Tavira Hotel, an 18th-century landmark filled with history, the restaurant has been open for only a month and is already the talk of the town. With its Scandinavian-inspired design, clean lines, and calm atmosphere, Mirsal radiates refinement and serenity. It’s the perfect place to stretch out an evening—start with an aperitif at the Bar da Lua, then move on to dinner under the citrus trees or in the elegant dining room.
Chef Fábio Domingues is no stranger to fine dining. Born and raised in Tavira, he left his hometown to gain experience in some of Europe’s top kitchens. His LinkedIn profile shows a career path that includes several Michelin-starred restaurants in the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg, and Portugal, including Vila Joya and Vila Vita in Porches. Later, he made a name for himself as the head chef at the Grand House Hotel in Vila Real de Santo António, where he impressed with his refined interpretation of Algarve’s products.
Now, he has returned to his hometown—and you can taste it in every dish. At Mirsal, he celebrates the Algarve while weaving in Moorish heritage and Mediterranean influences. It feels like coming home, but with the vision and creativity to lift Tavira’s dining scene to a higher level.
The big question is: will Mirsal become Tavira’s third Michelin restaurant, alongside A Ver Tavira and A Mesa? All signs point in that direction. The plates are beautifully presented, the flavors are balanced, and the service is warm, eager, and welcoming. At times still a bit uncertain, yes—but that’s part of being new, and the enthusiasm more than makes up for it. A Bib Gourmand seems well within reach, and with more time and polish, a Michelin star would not be surprising.
Mirsal’s menu is a tribute to the Algarve. No excess, just pure ingredients taking center stage. Some of the highlights include:
For vegan or gluten-free diners, there are excellent options, such as the lightly grilled courgette with vegetable emulsion and cured egg yolk or the white bean hummus with roasted aubergine. These show how Domingues looks beyond classic Portuguese cuisine and ensures everyone is welcome at his table.
What stands out immediately is the atmosphere. The service is warm, attentive, and personal. The chef himself sometimes stops by to explain a dish, a gesture that adds a special touch. The team is still finding its rhythm, but they radiate genuine hospitality and eagerness to learn. That’s part of the charm: you feel the energy of a place that wants to grow and excel.
The location completes the picture. The Palácio de Tavira was once one of the city’s great noble residences, built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Back then, it was a center of aristocratic life and grandeur. Today, it has been reborn with a new spirit—historic architecture fused with Scandinavian simplicity, creating a space that feels both monumental and contemporary.
Dining at Mirsal is more than just having dinner. It’s an experience of Tavira’s history, translated into a modern, refined setting.
After only a month of being open, one thing is already clear: Mirsal is one of the best restaurants in Tavira. The combination of a talented chef, a stunning location, and genuine service makes this an experience not to be missed.
Will it earn a Michelin star? Time will tell. But one thing is certain: Tavira has gained a new culinary hotspot, and Mirsal has everything it takes to become a benchmark for Algarve’s gastronomy.
Our tip: Arrive a little earlier, enjoy a cocktail at the Bar da Lua or a glass of wine in one of the atmospheric courtyards, and then let yourself be surprised by Chef Fábio Domingues’ creations. This is Tavira at its finest
