Eatery Come na Gaveta
Tucked away just a 5-minute walk from the picturesque Tavira river, eatery Come na Gaveta is a charming eatery that invites with warmth and a delectable menu.
With 14 tables thoughtfully arranged inside, the cosy layout creates an intimate atmosphere. The shop's name means "in the kitchen drawer," an intriguing reference to its history. In earlier times, Tavira's industrious entrepreneurs were quick to hide their plates in drawers to help customers in their shops.
Inside, the modern interior is accentuated by an enthusiastic team managing both the front and the culinary magic behind the scenes.
At the front is a pavement terrace with six tables.
Booking in advance was a wise choice, as the eatery is almost full of guests when we arrive. Our Friday lunch adventure begins with a delicious glass of red Douro, specifically the Quinta de Sao Jose, a premium wine priced at just 5.50 a glass.
The menu turns out to be a culinary journey, with sandwiches, salads, soups, seafood, meat dishes and delectable vegan options.
We treat ourselves to the beet carpaccio (€6) as a starter, a vibrant creation with avocado, pistachio pesto, fried corn and coriander oil. The smell of cloves fills the air, reminding us of the red cabbage with cloves that my mother used to lovingly prepare in the Netherlands.
Our exploration continues with the Salmorejo soup (€5), a Portuguese revelation that stimulates the senses. A cold red soup, with tomato, bread, mango, garlic and tomato jam, it is served with an oil infused with pesto. Distinct from gazpacho, this soup is potent and filling.
For the main course, the risotto (€11) shines, a symphony of rich mushroom flavours crowned with truffle oil.
Both the service team and the chefs wear identical clothing: a white polo shirt, black apron and black cap, which adds a playful touch.
Their diligence is only surpassed by their enthusiasm, resulting in an atmosphere that exudes joy. Although the ambiance of the restaurant is informal, it is the sparkling team that takes the experience to extraordinary heights. Kudos!
P.S. Eatery Come na Gaveta has the same owner as neighbouring Cocktail Bar Ofelia, a delightful riverside spot that adds even more charm to this beautiful city.
