Our Review

City Trip from the Algarve: Take the Train to Lisbon and Enjoy the Breathtaking Landscape Along the Way

Inspired by the book "Night Train to Lisbon" and the recommendation of a friend, we decided to leave our car behind this time and spontaneously hop on the train to Lisbon. Departing from the historic Loulé station in the Algarve, where parking is free, we purchased a round-trip first-class ticket online for just 40 euros, which included complimentary Wi-Fi and charging points.

Speed and Beauty

Traveling at speeds of up to 220 km per hour, we raced through a stunning landscape, far more beautiful than what one can typically see from the road. Along the journey, we were treated to breathtaking scenery and picturesque villages.

 Luxury and Comfort

First-class provided a luxurious experience with comfortable seats and convenient amenities like complimentary Wi-Fi and charging points for electronic devices. It was delightful to have our own space, reminiscent of an airplane.

Onboard Hospitality

The passengers onboard comprised a pleasant mix of both young and old. The atmosphere was jovial and relaxed, unlike the crowded trains we're accustomed to in the Netherlands. In the dining car, we not only enjoyed delicious snacks and drinks but also the hospitality of a gracious host who engaged in friendly conversation with everyone. His tales of old Portuguese laws and humor contributed to a convivial atmosphere. Plus, a delightful glass of wine (375 ml) cost only 3.80 euros.

Scenic Pit Stops

With stops in places like Albufeira, Tunes, Santa Clara, and Funcheira, offering views of the magnificent scenery, time flew by before we ultimately arrived in the heart of Lisbon, all within 3 hours.

Affordable and Convenient

The train journey proved not only comfortable and enjoyable but also significantly cheaper than traveling by car, especially when factoring in the costs of toll roads and parking in Lisbon. In the city, we relied on Uber, which often cost just 5 euros per ride, making it an affordable and comfortable way to get around.

After a successful weekend, we're already looking forward to the next time we journey to Lisbon..... by train!

This is great to know. We are going to Lisbon from Seville so we may take the bus to the Algarve and then train it to Lisbon.
