Umami – Asian Dining with a View in Quinta do Lago

Umami is beautifully located between Casa Velha and Casa do Lago, part of the Quinta do Lago restaurant group. The back terrace is the highlight: spacious, green, and with some views over the Ria Formosa and the iconic Bold Octopus beach club. With smooth jazz in the background, it’s a perfect spot for cocktails or an Asian-inspired dinner at sunset.

Food & Ambience: Mixed Feelings

While the location easily scores an 8.9, the food (8.2) and service (8.2) don’t fully live up to it. The team seemed a bit cold and inattentive. We’ve heard they’re struggling to find good staff, which could explain the lack of warmth and the not-so-special dishes. The menu is limited, but includes fish, meat, vegetarian and vegan options.

Fish Dishes

Fish lovers have plenty to choose from: the “Octopus & Roasted Bell Peppers” (€18.5), and the “Maguro Tataki” with bluefin tuna (€22.5). Sushi lovers can opt for the “Sashimi Moriawase” (16 pieces – €60) or “Nigirizushi” (10 pieces – €46). For starters, try the “Yellowtail Tartare” (€23) or “Soft Shell Crab Bao” (€15).

Meat Options

Meat dishes include the “Pork Gyoza” (€15), the expensive “Wagyu A5” with Szechuan sauce (€108), and the “Char Siu” BBQ pork (€32.5). Or the “Beef BBQ Robatayaki” (€17.5).

Vegetarian & Vegan Choices

Plant-based diners are not forgotten. The “Q Farm Vegetables Tempura” (€14), “Aubergine & Sambal” (€28), and “Tofu Robatayaki” (€12) are all vegetarian or vegan. Sides like “Sweet Potato & Honey” (€7.5) or “Zucchini & 7 Spices” (€6.5) are great add-ons. The “Veggie Combo, 10 pieces” sushi (€28) is the option for vegan guests.

Verdict

Come for the view and the vibe, but don’t expect a culinary highlight. For a real good sushi, Sushi Drive in Almancil is still our go-to — though you won’t get the same terrace magic there ...
