Stoicism in Portugal: Why the Portuguese Seem So Relaxed and Happy

Portugal has something special. A quiet calmness you start to feel the longer you stay here. And after living in the Algarve for years, I’ve noticed that Portuguese people — maybe without even realizing it — live much closer to the philosophy of Stoicism than many Northern Europeans do.

While people in countries like the Netherlands often try to control, plan and optimize everything, the Portuguese seem far more accepting of life as it comes. And honestly, that makes them look a lot happier.

You notice it in daily life. People don’t rush all the time. A delayed appointment? Fine. A longer queue at the supermarket? Nobody gets angry. There’s a quiet understanding that some things are simply outside your control. Very Stoic, actually.

The Portuguese also seem naturally focused on the present moment. A coffee in the sun, a long lunch with family, a small conversation with a neighbour… they value simple moments instead of constantly chasing the next goal.

In the Netherlands, life can sometimes feel like a never-ending race. In Portugal, life feels more like something to experience.

Maybe that’s why so many foreigners eventually fall in love with this country. Portugal teaches you to stop fighting life all the time — and simply live it.
