Some places hit you instantly. They surprise you, pull you in, and leave you glowing long after you’ve walked out the door. Rūmu in Lisbon is exactly one of those places. A secret restaurant and nightclub with no sign, no branding, no hint of what’s behind the entrance — just a quiet doorman. Honestly, it’s the place I was missing without knowing it. And yes: I wish we had this in the Algarve.

A mysterious entrance straight out of a movie

You arrive in a silent street in Bairro Alto, unsure if you’re in the right place. We asked the doorman cautiously: “Is this it?” A nod. A slight smile. No explanation.

Moments later a hostess picks you up and guides you through an abandoned shopping corridor — dimly lit, slightly surreal, almost cinematic. You feel the tension rise. Where are we going? What is this place?

And suddenly… the door opens and another world appears.

Warm light. Minimal Japanese touches. Low seating. A small DJ booth already pulsating with smooth rhythms. A cozy dancefloor that feels intimate instead of overwhelming. It’s beautiful, surprising, and instantly comforting.

Japanese dining at low tables — and yes, it’s really good

Rūmu isn’t just a nightclub. The Japanese-inspired food is genuinely part of the experience. You eat at low tables, which immediately creates a relaxed, almost communal feeling. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner before stepping onto the dance floor. Besides fish and meat dishes, there are delicious vegetarian and vegan options too.

After dinner we drifted to the dance floor, but you can skip dinner and come only for the club. After 11 PM you pay an entrance fee — and it’s worth every euro.
