The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far from the Tree

The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far from the Tree

Column by Peter Cruiming

Another expat cocktail evening. The invitation promised networking with like-minded people. I should have known.

By seven, I was standing with a glass of sparkling water (the only one without wine) among people who all did “something creative.” A photographer who’s currently between projects, a writer working on their first chapter, and a coach who “helps people find themselves” — mostly by the sea.

Three minutes later, I was stuck in a conversation about manifesting abundance, while trying to keep a piece of hummus-covered cracker from collapsing in my hand.

And then comes the question:
“So… what do you do?”

I start talking about Hotspots Algarve, honestly and with passion. Heads nod. Someone says, “Oh nice! And… do you actually make money with that?”

I smile, take another sip of sparkling water, and look around. In the distance, someone quotes Paulo Coelho:

“When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

Everyone nods solemnly, as if the universe might walk in any minute with a glass of wine and a business plan. And I think: maybe it does conspire — but usually only after you’ve already rolled up your sleeves.

I’m so happy with what I do. Creating, helping people, working hard — instead of just dreaming about what could be.

Back home, I see Elyas, busy cleaning out the horse paddocks. The apple clearly didn’t fall far from the tree. I smile and think of another quote, this time from Deepak Chopra:

“Always go with your passions. Never ask yourself if it’s realistic or not.”

Maybe the universe really does conspire — but only with those who act on their passions.
