Cabanas de Tavira is only 5 kilometers from Tavira, but once you arrive, it feels like stepping into another world. This charming fishing village has a laid-back atmosphere, a stunning location by the Ria Formosa, and a touch of romance that captures you instantly.
The story of Cabanas dates back to the 18th century, when fishermen built simple huts – “cabanas” – to store their tools and catch. From those few huts grew a small community that lived from the sea. Even today, you can still feel that heritage: colorful boats float in the lagoon and fresh fish remains at the heart of local cuisine.
One of the highlights is the boat trip to Ilha de Cabanas. For just €1.50 you hop on a small boat that takes you across in minutes. On the other side awaits a long sandy beach with clear water. Unlike the busier Algarve beaches, here you’ll find peace and space – perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or a romantic walk along the shore.
On Ilha de Cabanas, topless sunbathing is allowed everywhere, as on almost all Portuguese beaches. Nudism isn’t officially marked, but on the quieter ends of the island it is tolerated. Especially towards the eastern side, naturists find their spot to enjoy the sun and sea in complete tranquillity.
Cabanas lies in the heart of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a protected lagoon system famous for its unique flora and fauna. Walking or cycling around, you’ll come across salt pans with halophyte plants and samphire – a real delicacy in Portuguese cuisine. Birdwatchers are in for a treat: flamingos, spoonbills and kingfishers are often spotted. Seahorses and shellfish also thrive here, making it a paradise for nature lovers.
Along the beautiful boulevard of Cabanas you’ll find plenty of terraces. During the day, enjoy a coffee or fresh juice with views over the lagoon, while in the evening the restaurants come alive. From traditional Portuguese taverns to modern eateries – the atmosphere is warm and inviting. Dining as the sun sets behind Tavira feels naturally romantic. Cabanas may be small, but it offers plenty to do:
What makes Cabanas truly unique is its atmosphere. The village lives with the tides, the rhythm of the sea. There’s no rush, no mass tourism, just a gentle mix of locals and visitors enjoying simplicity. In the evening, when the terrace lights reflect in the water and the sky turns pink, you’ll understand why so many people fall in love with this place.
Cabanas de Tavira is the perfect day trip from Tavira, but also a wonderful place to stay longer. Whether you come for nature, the beach, the restaurants or simply the quiet romance – this village makes you forget the rest of the world.
In Cabanas de Tavira you’ll find a truly unique place to stay: Forte de São João da Barra, a 16th-century fort transformed into a charming boutique hotel with just 10 rooms. Entering through the old wooden gate, you’re immediately embraced by history and atmosphere. The owner, Luisa – a former journalist – personally welcomes her guests, creating a warm and homely feeling. The hotel is quietly located on the edge of the village, featuring a round swimming pool, a cozy Honesty Bar, and a lush garden with character. In the morning, enjoy breakfast with ocean views across the Ria Formosa. Within minutes you can stroll to the lively boulevard with its restaurants and terraces, or take the €1.50 boat to the island beach. Simple luxury, perfect for a romantic escape.
