9 Michelin Restaurants Closing Their Doors in 2025

The fine dining world is facing tough times. Nine top restaurants in the Netherlands, including Michelin-starred Fitzgerald, Flavours, and Meliefste, will close this year. The reasons vary — rising costs, staff shortages, burnout, or a shift in direction — but the message is clear: traditional fine dining is under serious pressure.

Fine Dining Under Pressure

In Rotterdam, Fitzgerald will close after ten years, while Flavours in Weert and Pikaar in Hilvarenbeek are shifting to a simpler, more accessible concept. De Zeeuw in Haarlem and Restaurant STER in Rotterdam are also shutting down, both hit hard by financial strain and the ongoing staff crisis.

Flicka in Kerkdriel, Bar Gui in Amsterdam, and De Dyck in Woubrugge will also close their doors. And Meliefste in Wolphaartsdijk ends a decade of success — not out of necessity, but to find new balance and inspiration.

A Changing Culinary Landscape

A clear signal: haute cuisine is changing. The future looks more casual, personal, with fewer courses and lower prices — for example, a three-course (lunch) menu for around €65. Perfect for guests who still love great food but prefer a shorter, fairer dining experience. Michelin is clearly opening up to a new audience.

Portugal – Al Sud in the Algarve Also Closes

The shift isn’t limited to the Netherlands. In Portugal, Al Sud, the Michelin-starred restaurant by chef Louis Anjos at the Palmares Beach House Hotel in the Algarve, also closed its doors. The move came as a surprise, as Al Sud was considered one of southern Portugal’s finest dining destinations. Its closure highlights that even in booming culinary regions, fine dining faces growing pressure and the need to adapt.
