The wetlands of Ria Formosa National Park consists of channels, islets, floodplains, sandbanks and sandy beaches and stretches for 60 km along the coast off the Algarve, between the beaches of Praia do Garrão and Praia da Manta Rota. At first glance, it somewhat resembles the Dutch and German Wadden Sea.

Unique nature reserve with sandy beaches and islands

Several hiking trails have been set out. In Ria Formoasa, from west to east, are the beautiful islands of Praia da Faro, Praia da Barreta, Praia da Culatra, Praia da Armona and Praia da Tavira with extensive sandy beaches. Here you will find sun, sea and .... tranquility!. The extensive beaches are clearly distinguished from those further west; from Quarteira, most of the beaches are small coves nestled between the rocks.

You can also visit Cacela Velha, a white town with an important architectural heritage, north of Tavira.

In addition to fishing, salt production and mollusc and crustacean fishing are traditional activities of the population around the Ria Formosa.
